Constant Quarry

SPACE is pleased to present the work of Brooklyn-based photographer, Tod Seelie, in Constant Quarry. For the past decade, Seelie has inexhaustibly photographed the underground music, art, and momentous DIY counterculture that has saturated his borough and spread into other areas across the country.

Seelie’s life is an adventurous one, whether he’s floating down the Mississippi or Hudson River on art-raft journeys or shooting rogue taxidermy projects made from Chinatown garbage or touring on a veggie-oil converted bus with the “Fuck Yeah” Fest. Seelie is the go-to photographer for bands like Japanther, Matt & Kim, The Death Set, and Parts & Labor, and for years he’s documented urban bicycle culture, namely the Black Label Bicycle Club, who practice philosophies – avoiding wastefulness, rejecting consumerism-as-identity, and using creativity as a means for improving ones life – upheld by other Seelie subjects.

Striking throughout Seelie’s photographs is his attention to color. Rock shows and nightscapes are washed in amber, green and magenta. Vibrant reds flash from hotel signs, sunlit curtains, and bleeding heads. Mixed into photographs of burning cars and bike jousting are a number of stunning landscapes, as quiet and emptied out as the other images are swelled with activity. The one hundred-plus color photographs in Constant Quarry, featuring portraits, landscapes, and events, are an autobiographical roundup of Seelie’s recent travels, friendships, collaborations and adventures from America’s rusted out underbelly to sweaty dance parties in Harlem and everything in between.

About the artist:

Tod Seelie graduated from Pratt Institute in 2002 and has exhibited in New York, Berlin, Tokyo, Paris, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Cleveland and Miami, with recent shows at Mass MoCA and a solo show at Cinders Gallery in New York. Seelie’s work has appeared in various publications, including Rolling Stone, The NY Times, New York Magazine, Spin, Vice, i-D, Paper, XXL, Art In America, Flash Art, Parade Magazine, Adbusters, Death + Taxes, and Hamburger Eyes among others. His work has also appeared in various photography books, such as The Vice Photo Book, Street World, Backyard Shakedown and Hijacked.
