Xiu Xiu with Million Brazilians
Xiu Xiu with Million Brazilians
Xiu Xiu is the ever-changing experimental art-music-performance project and most of all, band led by Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist-composer-songwriter Jamie Stewart. Over 17 years, more than a dozen band members, 14 full-length records, and countless EPs, splits, and one-off collaborations, Xiu Xiu has blazed a path through uncompromising pop, rock, punk, noise, dance music, and the avant-garde like no other group. Career highlights are as diverse (and sometimes unfathomable) as a commission by the Guggenheim examining firsthand accounts of exorcisms, a Nina Simone covers record with NYC jazz heavyweights, a queer reimagining of Mozart’s The Magic Flute in collaboration with legendary drag artist Vaginal Davis, a collaboration with Mitski for John Cameron Mitchell’s How to Talk to Girls at Parties, and a full length record of the music of Twin Peaks.
Their latest record, Girl with Basket of Fruit deals with themes and references to ritual, mythology, and martyrdom, imbued with the tension, sorrow, and danger of the daily life of so many today. The album features contributions from Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier, Oxbow’s Eugene Robinson, Cibo Matto’s Devin Hoff, jazz drummer Ches Smith, Haitian percussionists Emmanuel Obi and Ayo Okafor, and more.
For this special tour, Jamie will be joined by multi-instrumentalist Thor Harris and bassist Christopher Pravdica, both formerly of experimental rock legends Swans.
Belfast, Maine's dreamy and psychedelic avant-exotica trio Million Brazilians opens the evening.
