Black, Brown + Indigo - Symphony of the Soul

A film series showcasing the contemporary African and African-American experience

Indigo Arts Alliance in partnership with SPACE is bringing the power of Black storytelling to Maine, May 3rd - 5th, 2019. Black, Brown + Indigo is a series of films that each provide a glimpse into African and African-American life across the globe.

A mix of narrative and documentary features and shorts, the films highlight the diversity and complexity of Black lives across the Diaspora. The series seeks to bring Portland-area audiences together across communities to enjoy film and engage in meaningful dialogue, using cinema as a means to deepen their knowledge and understanding of African, Caribbean, South American and African-American culture.

See space.org/events for the full listing of Black, Brown + Indigo screenings

Imfura
Dir. Samuel Ishimwe | 36 min | 2018 |  Rwanda
A young man returns to the village where his deceased mother was born. He seeks to adopt a bruised collective recollection. Intoned chants all represent voices of possible reconciliation.

Kinshasa Symphony
Dir. Claus Wischmann and Martin Baer | 95 min | 2010 | DRC
Picture 200 musicians playing Beethoven’s Ninth in the Congo! The film follows West Africa’s only symphonic orchestra: Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste of Kinshasa, as it prepares for its first open-air concert in its neighborhood, Ngiri-Ngiri. It is also a study of people doing their best to maintain a most complex human joint endeavor in one of the world’s most chaotic cities. This powerful film is about the Congo, the people of Kinshasa and the power of music.
