SPACE'S BUILDING CAMPAIGN: CLAIMING A FUTURE FOR THE ARTS

OCTOBER 2015

WE DID IT!

Thanks to the generous support of curious community members like you, our Claiming SPACE Campaign raised $584,000 towards purchasing our building at 538 Congress Street.

As a home to 30+ working artists and Pickwick Independent Press, the ownership of this building allows us to preserve affordable space for artists in the Arts District and develop new programs that support artists and their practices. With the help of more than 300 donors, we have claimed a permanent home for SPACE in downtown Portland, ensuring that it remains a dynamic center for arts, artists, and ideas to thrive.
Thank you for your support!

CLAIMING A SPACE FOR ARTS

Grounded in the belief that vital communities are activated by experimentation, conversation, and camaraderie, SPACE engages a wide audience with provocative arts programs and category-defying events. From our versatile arts space in downtown Portland, Maine, we showcase music, present film screenings, curate exhibitions, oversee a statewide arts regranting program, and more. #claimingspace will secure our place in the Arts District, giving us a permanent home that allows for creative uses of our flexible rooms.

CLAIMING A SPACE FOR ARTISTS

SPACE occupies the first floor of a building that is home to studios for 30+ artists and a printmaking facility with 20 members, Pickwick Independent Press#claimingspace will preserve these affordable artist studios in Portland’s Arts District, provide professional support to studio artists, and create residency opportunities for local and visiting artists.

CLAIMING A SPACE FOR IDEAS

As a nexus for curious minds, SPACE collaborates with original thinkers and invites the public to participate in the ongoing pursuit of adventurous ideas. We invite our audiences to explore where and why art belongs, and how it affects our thoughts, lives, and connections with our world. #claimingspace will affirm ongoing experimentation.

CLAIMING A SPACE FOR YOU

With more than 200 events per year, SPACE has something for everyone. Our goal is to make our programming accessible to a diverse group of people, to be reactive to issues of social justice, and to be responsive to questions raised by our community. #claimingspace will assert SPACE's position in Portland as an anchor for community engagement.

SPACE is a nonprofit organization that supports contemporary arts projects, champions artists, and encourages an open exchange of ideas.
